The best water filters and water storage for emergencies

Personal water filters, purification tablets and emergency water storage.

Updated October 6, 2026

Stored water comes first. Ready.gov advises at least one gallon per person per day for several days to cover drinking and sanitation. Containers and bladders on this list hold tap water before an outage. Sealed pouches sit in a kit for years without attention.

A filter or tablet treats water you find later. The CDC says most portable filters remove parasites but not viruses or bacteria. A pore size of 0.3 micron or smaller is needed to also catch bacteria. Most filters here list bacteria and parasites but not viruses.

Frequently asked questions

How much water should I store per person per day?

Ready.gov advises at least one gallon per person per day for several days. That covers drinking and sanitation together. A household of four needs four gallons a day on that basis. Rigid containers such as the Reliance Aqua-Tainer hold 7 gallons each. The waterBOB holds up to 100 gallons in a bathtub when filled before an outage. The two pouch cases here hold 8 liters or less.

Does LifeStraw remove viruses?

It depends on the model. The LifeStraw Personal lists bacteria, parasites and microplastics and states that viruses are not removed. The same goes for the LifeStraw Peak Series Collapsible Squeeze 1L and the LifeStraw Peak Series Gravity 3L. The LifeStraw Go Series 22 oz does not name viruses either. The LifeStraw Family is a gravity purifier rated at 99.999% virus removal.

Do water purification tablets kill viruses?

Three of the four tablet products here name viruses. Aquatabs list viruses at 99.99%. Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide Tablets list bacteria, viruses and cysts including Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Katadyn Micropur MP1 is credited with viruses, bacteria and cysts by tester sources. Outdoor Life puts Aquatabs at about 30 minutes. Potable Aqua lists four hours per tablet and the Micropur treat time is not in the data.

What is the shelf life of emergency water pouches?

The two pouch products here carry maker figures. Datrex Emergency Water is rated for five years and comes as 64 pouches of 125 ml. The SOS Extended Life Emergency Water Pouch is rated for 10 years. Its storage range runs from minus 22 F to 149 F. Both list a USCG approval. Shelf life is a claim by the maker so check the pack before you rely on it.
